"A Firm Foundation" – Assessing Our Progress
Scripture: Matthew 7:24-27
“Therefore, everyone who hears these words of mine and puts them into practice is like a wise man who built his house on the rock. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house; yet it did not fall, because it had its foundation on the rock. But everyone who hears these words of mine and does not put them into practice is like a foolish man who built his house on sand. The rain came down, the streams rose, and the winds blew and beat against that house, and it fell with a great crash.”
Key word studies:
- Hears … and puts them into practice (poiei autous) — Not just listening or agreeing; active obedience, doing the words.
- Wise man (andra phronimon) — Prudent, thoughtful builder who plans with the future storm in mind.
- Built his house on the rock — Solid, unmovable foundation (Christ and His teaching; cf. 1 Corinthians 3:11 – “No one can lay any foundation other than the one already laid, which is Jesus Christ”).
- Foolish man (andra mōron) — Morally senseless, short-sighted; builds for appearance, ignoring coming judgment.
- On sand — Unstable, shifting base; looks good in calm weather but collapses under pressure.
- Rain … streams … winds … beat against — Inevitable trials, storms, tests—personal, cultural, spiritual—that reveal the true foundation.
Supporting passages:
- Matthew 7:21-23 — “Not everyone who says to me, ‘Lord, Lord,’ will enter the kingdom… but only the one who does the will of my Father.”
- James 1:22-25 — Be doers of the word, not hearers only.
- 1 Corinthians 3:10-15 — Each one’s work will be tested by fire; only what is built on Christ remains.
- Psalm 127:1 — “Unless the Lord builds the house, the builders labor in vain.”
